Big Manufacturers Are Competing To Launch 100%rPET Bottles, And The Prospect Of Sustainable Packaging Is Unlimited

Sep 06, 2023

Generally, we see the beverage bottles on the market are made of pet material, and it is also the highest recycling rate of waste plastic products, and it is also the most mature recycled plastic products, a ton of recycled PET yarn = 67,000 plastic bottles = reduce carbon dioxide 4.2 tons = save oil 0.0364 tons = save water 6.2 tons, By the end of 2031, the global recycled PET(rPET) market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 8%, totaling $4.2 billion, or about $27 billion. At present, the consumption of PET plastic beverage bottles in China is very high, and the recycling of discarded PET beverage bottles can not only reduce environmental pollution, but also turn waste into treasure.

In the future, packaging and manufacturing processes will continue to evolve in a more sustainable direction. Some leading brands have launched packaging made with 100% recycled PET material to increase recycling efficiency.

01 Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola India recently launched the first new 1L bottle made from 100% recycled PET for its packaged drinking water brand Kinley. India's current waste plastics regulations have previously banned the use of recycled materials in food-contact applications. Since then, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has reversed its stance: after a thorough review of the material taking into account food safety and complying with guidelines, recycled plastics will be used in the "packaging, storage, transport or distribution of food in 2022."
Coca-Cola has become the first company in India to launch 100% rPET bottles.

During the Qatar World Cup, Coca-Cola offered drinks in 100% rPET bottles. This is the first time that rPET bottles have been used in the FIFA World Cup, and it is also the first time that Coca-Cola has produced 100% rPET bottles locally in Qatar. At the World Cup venue, Coca-Cola has also placed dedicated recycling bins and will educate more than 20,000 volunteers and more than 1 million fans about responsible recycling through its on-the-ground and on-screen interactions, ensuring that recyclable plastic waste is placed in the right bins for further reuse. It is understood that the plastic bottles separated and collected during the competition will be recycled and converted into rPET bottles in Qatar, effectively achieving closed-loop recycling.

By the end of the year, in 10 European markets, Pepsi bottles will be made from 100%rPET, excluding the cap and label. In 2021 and 2022, PepsiCo will launch 100%rPET beverages in Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam and Argentina. Overall, Pepsi is gradually transitioning some brands to 100%rPET bottles in 22 markets around the world.

02 Nestle

Nestle's mineral water brand Valvert has launched packaging made from fully renewable PET material, the first time Nestle has launched packaging with this material in the European market. "We believe the new Valvert 100% rPET bottle is a breakthrough in the next generation of sustainable packaging that stimulates a circular economy from bottle to bottle," said Emmanuel Gruffat, Managing Director. This development supports Nestle's commitment to increase rPET content in its water bottles to 35% globally.

Minere, a natural mineral water brand under the Water Business unit of Nestle (Thailand) Co., LTD., recently launched Minere Eco-friendly rPET bottles. With the concept of "bottles made of bottles", the new rPET bottles are designed to close the loop and prevent plastic waste from ending up in landfills, water resources and oceans. The bottles, caps and labels are designed to be 100% recyclable.

Minere aims to transition all of its packaging to 2025% recycled rPET plastic by 100 years.

03 Suntory Pepsi Cola

Suntory Pepsi Beverages launched Pepsi and Pepsi Diet drinks packaged in rPET bottles in April, and recently launched the first TEA+ product in Thailand's ready-to-drink tea market with 100%rPET bottles. The packaging is designed for TEA+ flavored products and carries the 100%rPET logo, which meets FDA standards. TEA+ in this environmentally friendly packaging is now available on the shelves of convenience stores and select retailers in Thailand.

04 China Hong Kong Vitasoy

According to Vitasoy, a Chinese company in Hong Kong, its original soy milk and distilled water sold in the Hong Kong market have so far used 100%rPET.

Vitasoy Original Soy milk announced a new 100%rPET packaging last year. As for Vita distilled Water, 100%rPET bottles have been adopted in 430 ml, 700 ml and 1.5 litre sizes in 2019. Both sustainable packages have received a warm response from the Chinese market.
