China Plastic Film Industry High Quality Development Seminar: Where Is The Future Of Plastic Film?

Aug 19, 2022

Recently, sponsored by China Plastic Processing Industry Association, China plastic film Industry high quality development seminar was held in Suqian, Jiangsu province. At the meeting, the relevant person in charge of China Plastic Association said that the plastic film industry as an important part of the plastic processing industry, film varieties and application scope continue to expand, plastic film products market share gradually improved, the demand for stable growth, plastic products in each sub-industry, film industry operation quality significantly improved.

The relevant person in charge of China Plastic Association believes that while the current industry development is facing multiple pressures and difficulties, China's plastic film enterprises have also ushered in some new development opportunities.

"For example, agricultural thin films determine the supply of people's vegetable basket and rice bags. Various functional thin films are applied in various national fields, for the development of national defense, industry, electrical equipment industry, agriculture, transportation, construction industry and other fields, to achieve dual carbon goals for China and contribute to a better life for the people. In addition, the film industry is developing towards the direction of functionalization, lightweight, ecological, intelligent and single material, which is also the specific interpretation of the functionalization, lightweight, precision, ecological and intelligent of China's plastic processing industry." The person in charge said that reviewing the development of the industry, the plastic film industry continues to accelerate the adjustment of product structure, the use of new technology, the development of new products, has achieved sustained and stable development.

First,Plastic film and industrial chain

Plastic film refers to the film made of polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and other resins, used for packaging, and used as a coating layer. It can be mainly divided into PVA coated high barrier film, bidirectional stretch polypropylene film (BOPP), low density polyethylene film (LDPE), polyester film (PET), nylon film (PA), flow polypropylene film (CPP) and aluminum film.

The upstream of plastic film industry is mainly polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, nylon and other raw materials; Midstream for plastic film manufacturing industry; Downstream is widely used in food and beverage, agriculture, industry, health care, energy electronics and other fields.

From the perspective of the cost structure of plastic film production, the raw material cost accounts for 84.5%, the energy cost accounts for 8.5%, the labor cost accounts for 5%, and other costs account for 2%. It can be seen that the supply of plastic film raw materials largely determines the development of the plastic film industry.

From the point of view of the output of plastic film raw materials, with the continuous development of Chinese petrochemical industry and the continuous improvement of plastic industry technology, the output of primary plastics in our country also increased year by year, but due to the gradual implementation of the national environmental protection supervision and the constant implementation of the plastic limiting order, the output growth rate is decreased. According to data, the output of primary plastic form in 2021 was 110,391,000 tons, up 6.6% year on year.

Packaging industry is the biggest application field of plastic film in China, such as food and beverage packaging, pharmaceutical packaging, etc. With the continuous development of Chinese packaging industry and the growth of packaging demand brought by the rise of express industry in recent years, it makes our packaging industry's demand for BOPP film continue to grow and push the industry to sustainable development. According to data, in 2021, the total operating revenue of enterprises above designated size in the national packaging industry reached 1204.81 billion yuan, up 19.6% year on year.

Second, industry status

Along with the continuous development of Chinese petrochemical industry and plastic film industry in recent years, the variety and application scope of plastic film are expanding constantly, and the market demand for plastic film products is growing stably and pushing the industry to develop continuously.

According to data, the production of plastic film in 2021 reached 16,087,100 tons, up 7% year on year. According to the incomplete statistics of the relevant branches, the production of agricultural film is about 2.12 million tons, the total production of composite film flexible packaging is about 5.83 million tons, the total production of BOPP film is about 4.35 million tons, the total production of BOPET film is about 3.2 million tons, the total production of CPP film is about 1 million tons, the total production of aluminum plating film is about 600,000 tons, and the production of battery diaphragm is about 7.8 billion square meters.

From January to May this year, China's cumulative production of plastic film was 687 million tons, an increase of 7.04% year-on-year. There were 2,673 enterprises in the plastic film manufacturing industry, with a revenue of 15.089 billion yuan, up 10.36% year on year, and a profit of 9.18 billion yuan, with a profit margin of 6.09%.

In terms of the distribution of plastic film production in China, the top three regions in 2021 were Zhejiang, Guangdong and Jiangsu. Zhejiang's output was 3.538 million tons, up 9.55% year on year, accounting for 21.99% of the total output; Guangdong's output was 2,792,200 tons, up 7.69% year on year, accounting for 17.36% of the total output; Jiangsu produced 2,522,800 tons, up 6.16 percent year on year, accounting for 15.68 percent of the total.

According to the situation of plastic film industry revenue, our country plastic film industry revenue is on the rising trend in recent years. According to data, in 2021, the cumulative operating revenue of enterprises above the scale in the plastic film industry reached 351.468 billion yuan, up 27.6% year on year.

As a percentage of revenue, with the rapid development of the plastic film industry, the proportion of revenue of the plastic film industry in the total revenue of the packaging industry in 2021 exceeded the proportion of paper and board containers, occupying the first place. According to the data, in 2021, the operating revenue of enterprises above designated size in the packaging industry reached 1204.181 billion yuan, up 16.39% year-on-year. Among them, plastic film accounted for 29.19%, followed by paper and cardboard containers and plastic packing boxes and containers, accounting for 26.51% and 15.43%, respectively.

Three, plastic film recycling

It's important to note that to recycle plastic film, we don't just leave it in a curbside bin. Instead, we take it to designated locations for recycling. It's believed there are more than 18,000 designated recycling sites in the United States and Canada, many of which are located in supermarkets and other large retail stores. Before recycling, make sure the plastic film is clean, dry, and free of food debris. It can then simply be placed in any of the plastic film recycling locations indicated.

In the recycling process, the plastic film comes into the factory as a package and is then unwrapped by hand or by a cutting machine. It is then sent to a shredder where it is cut into pieces. The film is then cleaned and checked for contamination, cleaned and dried before being placed into an extruder where heat and pressure melt the plastic. The molten plastic is extruded from the extruder to form thin strips, cooled and cut into pellets, which are used by manufacturers to produce new plastic film products, plastic containers, crates, pipes, new plastic bags and pallets, among others.

However, the effectiveness of plastic film recycling is a topic of debate within the industry. Plastic film recycling programs can only be successful if recyclers accumulate large amounts of material for recycling, which is one reason why plastic film can only be collected at designated locations and not curbside recycling bins. Large retail stores collect plastic film from consumers and add it to film produced in their own factories.

However, the challenge here is that recycling companies often do not have the capacity to recycle plastic film, so the collected plastic film is often not recycled smoothly and it ends up in a landfill. In the United States, where only 5 percent of plastic film processing capacity is used, most recycled plastic film comes from retail store trays because they are cleaner.

In addition, the plastic film recycling market is not ideal, because make new plastic film recycling old plastic film is more profitable, to know the collection, classification, cleaning, and the cost of rework old plastic film is often 100 times to make new plastic film, this is a terrible Numbers, so we need social resources in order to encourage recycling companies into action.

Four,How will the plastic film industry develop in the future?

First, we should strengthen scientific and technological innovation to promote the high-quality development of the plastic film industry; second, we should accelerate the integration of the industrial chain and improve the integration ability of the film industry; third, we should strengthen the "three products" action and promote the activities of increasing varieties, improving quality and creating brands. Ccsa will continue to be committed to leading scientific and technological innovation, build a platform for scientific and technological trade exchanges in the industry, promote the precise docking of industrial chain and the transformation of achievements, and promote the high-quality development of plastic film industry.
